The National Military Museum - Palace of Rose was built in 1798 during the reign of Hammouda Pacha Husseinite Bey ( 1782-1814 ) . It is one of the greatest wonders of the Tunisian architectural art . It was first known by the public as the ” Grand Palais ” or that of ” Borj El Kebir .” This palace secured throughout its history multiple functions. It was first used as a place of rest and then walks spring as summer resort . In a second step , the palace became the residence of eminent personalities visiting Tunisia . Under the reign of Ahmed Bey (1837 – 1855) , the Palace of sheltered Rose from 1839 – 1840 the artillery barracks then the cavalry. Later it was the residence of foreign school officials War Bardo during the first opening (1840 – 1853) and also during the second period (1859 -1866 ) . In 1881, the Palais Rose served as headquarters for the French occupation troops. During the Second World War, the palace was used for military purposes by the Axis troops ( November 1942 – May 1943 ) and by units of the French army. After Independence, the Palais de la Rose sheltered school NCOs and became the seat of command of the unit of work and administration within the Department of Clothing and Subsistances . Throughout its history and especially since independence, the Palais Rose was the subject of several maintenance and restoration of the past which began in 1977 . Through the efforts of the Ministry of National Defence, who took over the repairs and restoration , the palace regained its glory. After which it was decided to make this monument a military museum . The Palais de la Rose was created under the law 106/86 , dated 31 December 1986. Its mission is to preserve, present and enrich the military historical heritage to perpetuate the memory of those who died for their country. The museum was inaugurated on 25 June 1984 after restoration work which he was the object. But he was open to the public June 24, 1989 on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the creation of the national army. The National Military Museum has a rich and valuable collections of more than 23,000 objects ( knives , guns , oil paintings , bas- reliefs, miniature models of battles, models of warships , shields, guns , planes, heavy weapons … ) belonging to almost all periods of military history of Tunisia which a large quantity of weapons dating from the nineteenth century was used by the Tunisian troops during the Crimean War in 1854 alongside the Ottoman Empire against the Russian Empire. The various collections of historical objects are distributed and exhibited in successive rooms of the palace in the chronological order of events in the history of our country that spans over 3000 years.
